Father Frederick Cahill C.S.B. (1920 - 1983)

Fr. Cahill died as he lived, involved in his vocation of living the message of Jesus: each man may hope for life eternal if he uses his life selflessly for his neighbour and for his creator. Fr. Cahill died surrounded by his community of young people. His life among them expressed his love and concern. This same love and concern he showed for students, his school, his brother Knights, his fellow parishioners of St. Gerard's and his Basilian confreres.

Fr. Fred Cahill was dedicated to the education of the youth of Alberta and to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Likewise, for more than twenty-five years he was a strong supporter of the Alberta Knights of Columbus. His teaching career in Alberta began at St. Francis High School in Lethbridge in 1957. From there he moved to Calgary in 1962 where he taught at St. Mary's High School until 1968 and then Bishop Grandin High School until his death. Fr. Cahill was a Chaplain for the Knights and for many years, the Colombus Boy's club at Waterton. He was also the director of the youth "Search" program in Calgary.

After Father Cahill's sudden death in January, 1983, the Calgary Chapter of the Knights of Colombus supported the establishment of this Memorial Foundation in his honour. The primary object of this foundation is to assist the needs of the Church through encouraging, promoting and assisting Albertans in their continuing education in the Catholic Faith so that they might better serve the needs of our Catholic youth in today's world.

The community of the church has always accepted its parental role of teaching her children the truth of God's relation to the world as Creator, Saviour and Father. For it to do less would be to neglect to pass on the heritage of order and peace which she holds in trust for all who seek the meaning of life and the promise of eternity.

The Knights of Columbus and the Reverend Father Fred Cahill C.S.B. Memorial Foundation enter into the most important work of the church: the education of the young. It is what Jesus did while among us. It is the task He gave to the church as He ascended into heaven. It is our duty to the young.

The Father Fred Cahill Memorial Foundation is gathering funds and offering bursaries to assist those who desire to pursue a life of teaching Catholic faith in parishes and schools throughout Alberta and the North West Territories. These recipients intend to utilize their expertise in a parish or a school setting, teching and working with youth.

The Foundation also sponsors Conferences organized to support catechists, teachers and parents by bringing in resources of specialists to assist these catechists, teachers and parents in their continuing education.
