Message from Bishop McGrattan
This year marks the 150th Anniversary of Canada in which we consecrated the Diocese of Calgary and the country to Our Lady. In consultation with the Diocesan College of Consultors and Fr. Wilbert Chin Jon, I want to announce today my desire and intention to make Our Lady of the Rockies Parish in Canmore a Diocesan Marian Shrine. This will take effect on the day of the consecration of the new church building in the spring of 2019.
In our tradition a shrine is “a church or a sacred place to which members of the faithful make pilgrimage for a special reason of piety and prayer.”
The Rockies, by their natural beauty and grandeur, have the power to draw us out of our busy lives and lead us to contemplation and prayer. We visit the Rockies to rest and play which is a human experience. By designating Our Lady of the Rockies as a new diocesan shrine, we will invite people to make a religious pilgrimage, to be a spiritual base camp of prayer as one enters the Rockies. This has the potential to connect our ordinary lives to the faith experience of God who is present to each one of us.
As a diocesan shrine, the parish will offer more abundantly the paths of salvation. It will offer retreat programs and a space where the liturgical and the devotional life of the church may rekindle a sense of being loved and cared for by God through our Blessed Mother.
I look forward to the day that our diocese will have this dedicated Marian shrine. I ask for your prayers that the Lord may bless this initiative. We also ask for the assistance of Saint Joseph in establishing this diocesan shrine to our Lady of the Rockies. We place ourselves always under the protection of our Mother.
