His Excellency, Bishop William T. McGrattan, is pleased to announce that he has called Rev. Mr. Derek Remus to be ordained to the priesthood on Friday, 29 June 2018 at 7:00 pm in St. Mary's Cathedral.
Deacon Derek was born in Blairmore, Alberta on September 21, 1989 and was baptized at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Coleman. He grew up with his younger brother and sister in Warner and later Coaldale, Alberta. After completing high school, he went to Thomas Aquinas College, a Catholic great books college in Santa Paula, California, and graduated from there in 2011 with a B.A. in Liberal Arts. In August 2012, he went to Peru, where he spent six and a half months carrying out Catholic missionary work. After returning to Canada in 2013, he was accepted as a seminarian for the Diocese of Calgary by the Most Reverend Frederick B. Henry and began studies at St. Joseph Seminary, Edmonton. From September 2016 to July 2017, he carried out his pastoral internship at St. Bonaventure Parish, Calgary under Fr. David Meadows. On December 23, 2017, Bishop McGrattan ordained him to the transitional diaconate. Deacon Derek is currently back at the seminary for his final year of studies and is completing his Master of Divinity.
We give thanks to God for the gift of Deacon Derek's call to the priesthood, and we invite and encourage the faithful of the diocese to come and join in the celebration of the conferral of Holy Orders in June.
