The Feed the Hungry Program now has four components: Sunday Dinner Program, Community Kitchen, Hampers for the Homeless and Agency Outreach.

1. Sunday Dinner Program

The Sunday Dinner Program provides full course, nutritious meals to an average of 700 dinner guests in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. Dinner includes meat, potatoes, vegetables, fruit, salad, bread and dessert. The menu changes weekly. Dinners are held 48 Sundays of the year from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cathedral Hall (221-18th Ave. SW).

2. Community Kitchens

The Community Kitchens classes offered by the Feed the Hungry Program at St. Mary’s Hall were started in 1999 and are overseen by Community Kitchens of Calgary. The St. Mary’s program is one of dozens citywide. Up to twelve people meet every other week to plan two weeks of main course meals based on the most affordable food available that particular week. They then gather to prepare and package their food for use at home.

Typically, each meal costs less than $1.75/ person. Other benefits include increased nutrition, heightened awareness of the importance of good nutrition, reduced mealtime stress, and the companionship of planning and cooking with others.

3. Hampers for the Homeless

In order to supplement the food available to those on the streets, hampers are distributed to the homeless guests of the Sunday Dinners. These hampers are packaged by the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank Society and are specifically designed for people who do not have facilities to store or prepare food. The hampers consist of non-perishable, prepared foods packaged in easy to open containers and do not require the use of utensils or cooking facilities.

4. Agency outreach

Available resources are shared with other agencies that offer food as part of their service to the poor. This outreach includes distribution of surplus food from the dinners, financial support of feeding agencies in Calgary and collaborative efforts. When funds are available to share, Feed the Hungry supports other feeding agencies in need of financial assistance. Applications for funding are reviewed annually through the Allocations Committee of Catholic Charities.
